Is it really possible to be in a relationship without having sex? If you've ever worried about whether or not a sexless relationship is normal, you've come to the right place!

Hi, this is Sherri Amatenstein answering your love and relationship questions. Today’s question is: Can a couple ever be happy if there is no sex in the relationship?
It depends on the couple. Statistics say that on average married couples have sex once a week. But statistics also say couples haven’t had sex in six months to a year. In my practices currently I have 3 sets of couples who have not had sex in ten years. Not all sexless marriages are all the same. In some cases the bond between the couple was never sexual. It was more meeting of the minds and souls. In some cases, the sex was hot until some event happened. Perhaps they had a baby and then their priorities turned to other this and then sex just petered out. With other couples, sex starts to be used as a weapon. One partner was purposely withholding in a passive aggressive way because they’re angry, they’re hurt, and the one who withholds sex hold a very potent weapon. Does it make for a good marriage? No. So some marriages can be if not euphoric without sex.
Happy enough? It does depend on the couple. On the whole though, marriages are more fulfilling for the couple when they do have a sexual life. Now is it possible to start having sex again after a long layoff? It’s almost like being a virgin again. When it’s been so long, it’s almost like you don’t know where to put your tongue or your hand. In those cases when a couple really wants to try to recreate that connection, I say start slow. Watch sexy movies. Neck in the car like when you were teenagers.
