Strong aftershocks have rocked New Zealand following a 7.8-magnitude earthquake that killed two people.
The South Island has seen hundreds of tremors, including a 6.3-magnitude quake, after the initial one struck after midnight on Monday.
Emergency officials are warning of a tsunami and have urged people living along the east coast to move to higher ground
Prime Minister John Key described the scene in Kaikoura as "utter devastation" while flying over the area. He said the damage bill will likely be in the "billions of dollars", according to a statement seen by Reuters
The first quake struck 57 miles north-northeast of Christchurch just after midnight local time on Monday and shook much of the country.
A second of 6.2 magnitude struck New Zealand’s South Island at around 2.20am this morning.
Roads, railways damaged after quake
The earthquake caused major damage to infrastructure.
Road and rail links in the north of the island were closed after land slippages and cracking.
