Before Going for Gold, there was this pilot hosted by Bill Rafferty. For in 1987 (the same year hosted both Blockbusters & Card Sharks), Reg Grundy Productions created this game show called Run for the Money. It worked the same as Going for Gold would be, but without the qualifying round (and no foreigners either). Sadly, the pilot didn't sell, but the format was later sold to England and that's how it became Going for Gold. It also sold in France as "Questions pour un Champion".
