SIGLI, INDONESIA — Rescuers were continuing to search for survivors after an earthquake struck Indonesia’s largest island, Sumarta, on Wednesday, killing at least 97 people and injuring hundreds more.

The 6.5 magnitude quake hit the east coast of Aceh province, about 11 miles southeast of the town of Sigli, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

Indonesian authorities said the Pidie Jaya regency, which has a population of 140,000, was the worst-hit area, Reuters reported.

Indonesia sits on the Ring of Fire and has experienced 15 earthquakes measuring 6 or more on the Richter scale since December last year, according to the USGS.

Around 120,000 people were killed in Aceh when the region suffered huge destruction in the Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004, which was triggered by a 9.2 magnitude earthquake.

However, no tsunami warning was issued in relation to this most recent quake.
