A newly-released, declassified US intelligence report has found Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered an ‘influence campaign’ in the 2016 US presidential election.

The report claims that Putin’s alleged actions aimed to undermine the democratic process and besmirch Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.

Prior to the release of the report, US officials accused the Kremlin of being responsible for the hacking of Democratic Party emails, in an effort to denigrate his rival.

The newly-released document finds that the Russian president sought to help Republican candidate and eventual winner, Donald Trump.

“We further assess Putin and the Russian Government developed a clear preference for President-elect Trump,” the report states.

“We also assess Putin and the Russian Government aspired to help President-elect Trump’s chances when possible by discrediting Secretary Clinton and publicly contrasting her unfavorably to him.”

Trump has consistently questioned US intelligence claims of Russian hacking.

After being briefed on the report by intelligence chiefs, the president-elect said the election outcome had not been affected.

Russia denies any involvement in the hacking. WikiLeaks founder, Julian Assange, says Moscow is not the source of the stolen Democratic Party emails, which were leaked on the site in the run-up to the November vote.
