ORLANDO, FLORIDA — After a fugitive murder suspect fatally shot one police officer, a manhunt led to the death of another in a road accident.

Markeith Loyd, 41, has been wanted by police since December for allegedly murdering his pregnant girlfriend and critically wounding her brother.

The Orlando Sentinel reports that on Monday, Orlando police Master Sergeant Debra Clayton spotted the suspect at a local Walmart around 7 a.m. She gave chase, and yelled for Loyd to stop. The suspect responded by opening fire and wounding her. She eventually died from her injuries.

According to a statement released by the city of Orlando, Loyd then fled in a police car, and was seen by a deputy as he was pulling into a nearby apartment complex. Loyd shot at the deputy but missed, instead hitting his vehicle. He carjacked another vehicle and sped away.

The stolen vehicle was found abandoned near Rosemont and Cinderlane Parkway, prompting a search of the area. In the ensuing manhunt, another officer identified as Norman Lewis was killed after a van collided with his motorcycle.

A SWAT team was called to scour the area, but were unable to find Loyd. He is still at large.
