U.S. troops began arriving in Poland on Thursday. There will be over 3,000 deployed and dispersed throughout the region, making the U.S. military presence in Europe the largest it’s been in decades.

U.S. troops began arriving in Poland on Thursday, reports CBS News.
There will be over 3,000 deployed and dispersed throughout the region, making the U.S. military presence in Europe the largest it’s been in decades, notes Euronews.
In addition to soldiers, large equipment, including tanks and vehicles, is also being rolled into the nation.
Their presence is intended to provide security and solace to countries at risk of Russian aggression.
It also serves as a reassurance to NATO that the U.S. is committed to protecting the organization’s allies in eastern Europe.
The Fox News notes that the move "...represents a commitment by President Barack Obama to protect a region that became deeply nervous when Russia stormed Ukraine and took over Crimea in 2014, and then began backing rebels in Ukraine's east."
In Poland, there are plans to celebrate the troops’ arrival, but Russia is decidedly less enthused.
Dmitry Peskov, spokesperson for Vladimir Putin, said, “We perceive it as a threat. These actions threaten our interests, our security. Especially as it concerns a third party building up its military presence near our borders."
At this time, it is unknown how President-elect Donald Trump, who has expressed an interest in establishing a better relationship with Russia, intends to address the deployment once in office.
