This is another set of words that are easily confused by people.

Let’s break it down:

WHO is used to refer to the subject of the sentence.

WHOM on the other hand refers to the object.

The usage of this pair the same as ‘he’ and ‘him’.

Therefore, there is a very easy trick to figure out which word is correct.

_______ did this? → would you use ‘he’ or ‘him’? Yes, he. So if he is correct, so is WHO. Who did this? He did.

What about this one? ____ should I invite? Which one is correct: Should I invite he? Or Should I invite him?

Him is correct and therefore so is whom. Whom should I invite?

Also keep in mind that you do not use ‘that’ to refer to people. Therefore:

He was the only person that came. IS INCORRECT!

He was the only person who came. IS CORRECT.
