One day lasers could be used to turn the atmosphere into a giant magnifying lens. It’s a new concept by BAE Systems called Laser Developed Atmospheric Lens, or LDAL. An aircraft would use high-powered lasers to manipulate the atmosphere through heating or ionization. The operator can then change the path of light and radio signals, creating a magnified image. LDAL would be beneficial for the military to view battlefields from long distances. The concept is far from a reality, but it could be the future of military surveillance.
