Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has said that humans have already taken on cyborg characteristics, and he only expects this integration to continue.
He made these comments on Monday during a talk at the World Government Summit in Dubai where he shared his thoughts about civilization’s immediate future, notes the Daily Mail.
Musk has been quoted as saying, “I do think there is a path to having some sort of merger of biological intelligence and machine intelligence.”
He added, in part, “To some degree, we are already cyborgs. You think of the digital tools that you have, the applications that you have. You can ask a question and instantly get an answer from Google...Like, if somebody dies, their digital ghost is still around. Their emails and the pictures they posted and their social media, that still lives even if they die."
Musk also suggested that merging with artificial intelligence, or AI, is a way to prevent humans from becoming useless as more advanced technologies spread, notes CNBC.
He reportedly gave the example of how, over the next two decades, autonomous cars are likely to displace workers whose jobs involve driving.
Nevertheless, Musk did offer hope for a possible solution, telling the audience, “Some high bandwidth interface to the brain will be something that helps achieve a symbiosis between human and machine intelligence and maybe solves the control problem and the usefulness problem.”
