The head of the New York Police Department, or NYPD, is speaking out about the dangers the city could face if President Trump’s proposed federal budget passes, reports the New York Daily News.
On Thursday, Police Commissioner James O’Neill tweeted, “Under @POTUS budget, virtually all fed funding to #NYPD eradicated. Entire counterterrorism apparatus in nation's top terror target hobbled.”
Department spokesman J. Peter Donald also quotes O’Neill as saying about Trump’s plan, “This budget as proposed would make #NYC increasingly less safe.”
Meanwhile, Trump emphasized the safety component of his proposal, tweeting Thursday morning, “A budget that puts #AmericaFirst must make safety its no. 1 priority—without safety there can be no prosperity.”
According to the Daily Beast, “Though Trump’s budget makes no specific mention of funding for the city’s police department, it does end federal funding transfers to cities that offer haven to undocumented immigrants.”
Other so-called sanctuary cities like San Francisco are trying to fight the president’s immigration-related withdrawal of federal funding in court.
