A study has found that exposure to opioids is particularly taking a large toll on American youth. While most of the attention has been previously focused on adults, poison control centers receive nearly 11,700 calls per year about exposures in kids and teens. “In this study, we found that poison control centers in the United States receive a call every 45 minutes for a child that has been exposed to opioid medications,” Dr. Gary Smith, Nationwide Children’s Hospital told CBS News. That study was conducted by researchers at the Center for Injury Research and Policy, who analyzed calls to poison control centers from 2000 to 2015. The study found that children under six are most likely to suffer the most from exposure, but teens are also at risk.
