The Power Rangers are returning to entertain a whole new generation, and in 2017 they are making a statement.
According to the Daily Mail, the iconic superhero story from the 90s will return to the big screen, but this time it’ll be more meaningful because singer Becky G’s character is a lesbian, Latina protagonist.
The identity of Becky’s character, Trini, is apparently “small” but “pivotal,” and according to the Daily Mail, “she’s questioning a lot about who she is. She hasn’t fully figured it out yet. I think that’s what’s great about the scene and what that scene propels for the rest of the movie is, ‘That’s okay.’”
Accepting difference is definitely a progressive theme that the film wants to take on. It’s reported that only 19 characters in all the top 100 films of 2014 were represented as gay, lesbian or bisexual, so including one in this story is important for the LGBTQ community.
The Power Rangers movie will also reportedly feature an autistic character, which also sends the message: It doesn’t matter who you are, you can help save the world.
