LAMPUNG, INDONESIA — Barely three weeks have passed since we last reported an acid attack on a young woman in Indonesia, and it has happened again.
This time a 20-year-old man in southern Sumatra identified in media reports only as SM, has thrown sulfuric acid into the face of a 13-year-old girl whom reports refer to as his ex-girlfriend, even though the age of consent in indonesia is 16 years.
On the evening March 18, Dwi Ayu (Deh-wee Aye-yoo) had taken a bathroom break from watching TV with her family at home in Lampung. A moment later, they heard Ayu screaming for help.
Her father ran to the bathroom to find Ayu on her knees, clutching her face. He noticed the back door was open. Ayu said SM had entered through the back door. After a brief exchange, he threw a container of acid into Ayu’s face.
The deranged man was arrested by village residents within a couple of hours and escorted him to the local police station.
Young Ayu is recovering from burns to her face, neck and chest. It’s not known if her eyesight has been affected.
