Cambridge, Massachusetts, may soon be joining a growing number of U.S. cities that are calling for impeachment investigation of President Trump. ABC News reports that the city council is set to vote Monday on a resolution which states that the grounds for such an investigation are “including but not limited to the violations of the Foreign Emoluments Clause and the Domestic Emoluments Clause of the United States Constitution.”
The two constitutional clauses, in effect, restrict the president from benefiting financially from his position whether the source is a foreign or domestic entity, notes the Huffington Post.
The city’s policy order indicates that because Trump did not fully separate himself from these emoluments during the transition, once he took office, he violated the clause.
It goes on to say that “these violations undermine the integrity of the Presidency, corruptly advance the personal wealth of the President, and violate the public trust…”
As such, the council calls on “the United States House of Representatives to support a resolution authorizing and directing the House Committee on the Judiciary to investigate whether sufficient grounds exist for the impeachment of Donald J. Trump, President of the United States…”
If the resolution passes, the progressive group Common Dreams says that Cambridge would become the fifth city in the U.S. to vote in favor of removing Trump. The other locales include Charlotte in the state of Vermont, and three cities in California--Alameda, Richmond, and Berkeley.
According to ABC News, “Trump's lawyers have...previously said that all potential conflicts of interest have been ironed out.”
