Police and National Guard troops advanced on demonstrators protesting on Francisco Fajardo highway in Caracas on April 26, shooting water cannons and firing tear gas.
In addition to anger and unrest aimed at President Nicholas Maduro and the ongoing economic crisis in Venezuela, protesters and activists say police have used violent protest suppression tactics that violate their constitutional right to protest peacefully. Up to 30 people have died in the ongoing protests, including a 20-year-old student killed during protests on Wednesday.
On Thursday, April 27, reports said Maduro’s administration began the process of leaving the Organization of American States, potentially further isolating the country.
