AUS 71 vs 64 TUR
LONDON, August 31 - Tristan KNOWLES (AUS) sank a field goal with just over four minutes left to put Australia ahead to stay in their win over Turkey.
The Turks had pulled in front 62-61 with 4:44 left in the game on a bucket by Ferit GUMUS, but less than half a minute later KNOWLES nailed a short shot to put the Australians in front for good. The Aussie defence smothered the Turkish attack until the end to secure their second win in as many games at the London 2012 Paralympic games.
KNOWLES finished with 17 points, as did teammate JUSTIN EVESON (AUS).
The Turks were coming off an opening-day win over the United States and were looking to upset the defending Paralympic gold medallist. They caused Australia a few problems in the first half when GUMUS had a hot hand and Bestami BOZ (TUR) hauled in a couple of defensive rebounds to help Turkey keep pace.
But the Turks were unable to keep EVESON and KNOWLES in check.
After Turkey managed to nudge into the lead by one point late in the game, they failed to keep their composure and made too many basic errors, which their opponents took advantage of.
Turkey co-captain Ozgur GURBULAK was the game's top scorer with 20 points.
