The No. 8 seed Arkansas State continued its run in the Sun Belt Conference Baseball Championship with a 4-3 win against No. 5 seed Texas State in an elimination game on Friday night at Bobcat Ballpark.
Arkansas State (29-28) advances to face No. 1 seed UL Lafayette in the semifinals. The Red Wolves will have to win two games against the Ragin’ Cajuns to advance to Sunday’s winner-take-all championship game. The first game is set for 12:30 p.m. CT with the “if necessary” game taking place at either 7:30 p.m. CT or 40 minutes following the game, depending on results of the other semifinal game. Texas State (31-28) is eliminated from the tournament.
Arkansas State sophomore Tanner Kirby impressed in relief as he tossed 6 1/3 innings, struck out five and allowed one earned run on three hits. Kirby earned his first win of the season. Texas State senior Jeremy Hallonquist (5-6) took the loss after he tossed 2 2/3 innings and allowed three earned on four hits with a strikeout.
