Portland Police have charged Jeremy Joseph Christian, 35, with murder for the stabbing deaths of two people aboard a Portland transit train on Friday, May 26.

The victims had intervened as the suspect shouted racist and belligerent remarks aboard the MAX train.

Other transit riders, including the man who broadcast this video live to Facebook, pursued the suspect when the train stopped at the Hollywood/NE 42nd Ave MAX station. Police were also in pursuit and caught up with Christian near the Providence Portland Medical Center.

Christian has been charged with two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder, all felonies, and three other misdemeanors. He is being held at the Multonomah County Detention Center.

Witnesses told police that the suspect “was on the MAX train yelling various remarks that would best be characterized as hate speech toward a variety of ethnicities and religions.” At least two of the victims tried to intervene. One victim was pronounced dead at the scene and a second died at the hospital. A third was treated for injuries that were not life-threatening.

Larry Blackwood, who filmed this video, said he was in the car behind the scene and saw people shouting that the suspect “was stabbing people.” He and others took off in pursuit.
