Orlando Police Department Chief John Mina and members of the GLBT Community Center of Central Florida marked the first anniversary of the Pulse Nightclub attack by lighting a memorial for its 49 victims.
The eight-foot-tall memorial art installation for the victims is made of 49 candles, each with a photo of one of the victims. The candles are surrounded with rainbow flowers and lilies. The memorial was lit for the first time at 9 am on June 12. It was also the first time that the GLBT Center opened its new facility to the public, after being under renovation for the past two years.
The attack at the gay nightclub one year ago was the deadliest mass shooting in US history, leaving 49 dead and 53 injured.
