A 16-year-old Sudanese migrant reportedly drowned on June 13 after jumping into the sea at Ventimiglia, close to Italy’s border with France, when one of his shoes was washed away.

Firefighters, police and rescue services were assisting in the search for the teenager’s body, according to local media.

InterSos, a humanitarian agency that assists migrants at Ventimiglia, reported that the teen was washing his shoes at the mouth of the Roja River when one shoe washed into the sea. He then jumped in after the shoe. InterSos said it was likely he was unable to swim or was carried away by strong currents. The agency also denounced the what it described as the government’s failure to address the “extreme degradation of about 250 people” living in Ventimiglia. Credit: MSF Sea via Storyful
