with one move Monday, the Washington Mystics became one of the teams to beat in the WNBA, and the Sky hit the reset button on the franchise.
As expected, the Sky traded former league MVP Elena Delle Donne to one of their Eastern Conference rivals, months after the team reportedly fell out of favor with its star player.
Sky owner Michael Alter reportedly confirmed to the New York Times that the teams had reached an agreement in principle, though on Tuesday Sky CEO Adam Fox denied that Alter confirmed the deal in an email statement to the Tribune. Fox did not comment on whether a deal was in place, but cited league policy that prohibits restricted free agents from being traded until Wednesday.
On Monday, the Mystics cleared space for Delle Donne with a three-way trade.w
Some observers say the Sky got the best haul they could coax from the Mystics, given the worst-kept secret that Delle Donne wanted out of Chicago and desired a trade to the team nearest her hometown, Wilmington, Del.
If the trade becomes official on Wednesday or later this week, the Sky will receive All-Star center Stefanie Dolson; guard Kahleah Copper, last year's No. 7 draft pick; and the Mystics' first-round pick this year (No. 2 overall).
They'll join a roster that features Cappie Pondexter, Courtney Vandersloot, Imani Boyette and Jessica Breland in prominent roles.
"It's a very good roster. It's a young roster. The key is chemistry," said Mel Greenberg, a blogger and member of the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame.
In the East, Greenberg said, "there will be a bunch of (teams) fighting for six, seven, eight (seeds), and (the Sky) could be in that mix. It's not outlandish for them, by the time season ends, to be making a run for a playoff spot."
First-year coach Amber Stocks' inexperience will be a question mark, however, Greenberg said.
For Delle Donne, the trade closes the first chapter of her ascension to women's basketball royalty, during which she earned league MVP honors in 2015 and won an Olympic gold medal last summer.
The missing bullet point on her resume, however, is a WNBA championship, something the Sky teams she led failed to accomplish in four trips to the playoffs.
Sources told the Tribune last week that Delle Donne had become dissatisfied with the Sky's direction and also desired to be closer to her family. Her older sister, Lizzie, has autism and cerebral palsy, is blind and deaf and can communicate with Delle Donne only through touch and smell.
Blockbuster trades are uncommon in the WNBA, particularly for a restricted free agent. The Sky would have had the right to match any offer for Delle Donne.
But Delle Donne hinted in a past interview that she would consider sitting out the season to force the Sky's hand, a maneuver former teammate Sylvia Fowles used to get traded to the Lynx in 2015.
