Andrew Garfield’s statement that he was a gay man just without the physical act didn’t go over too well with the LGBTQ community.
Andrew made the statement while discussing his role as Prior Walter in the London revival of Angels in America… and even though his heart was in the right place, the internet did not accept it.
Some fans claimed that he may have immersed himself in the gay community to prepare for his role, but he shouldn’t confuse that with the extent of gay lifestyles.
They accuse him of cultural appropriation and they call him completely oblivious, some saying it must be nice to be gay without any of the hardships.
Another critic said it makes him tired when straight tourists try on oppression for kicks.
During his interview Andrew said that he would watch RuPaul’s drag race to rehearse for his role, and one Twitter user pointed out that Andrew’s view of being gay is having friends over to watch RuPaul.
Andrew has yet to address the controversy.
