It was recently announced that Xanda, a resident of Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park and son of Cecil the lion, was shot and killed.
The person who claimed the 6-year-old’s life is trophy hunter Richard Cooke who, in 2015, also killed the lion’s brother, reports The Independent.
Xanda took fire after wandering beyond the park’s protected range, according to The Telegraph.
His death became known after Cooke returned the monitoring collar the lion had been wearing.
The Telegraph reports that Andrew Loveridge, with the Department of Zoology at Oxford University, who was involved in fitting the animal with that collar, described the trophy hunter as, “one of the good guys” and “ethical.”
It was also noted that, “His hunt was legal and Xanda was over 6 years old so it is all within the stipulated regulations.”
Xanda was killed not far from where his 13-year-old father, one of the most famous big cats in Africa, who perished at the hands of Minnesota dentist Walter Palmer.
