SAN ANTONIO — Thirty-nine undocumented migrants were found inside truck parked at a Walmart in San Antonio, Texas early Sunday morning, with nine people reported dead so far from the sweltering heat inside the vehicle, according to the New York Times. Officials say many more people could have been inside the truck, but left the scene before authorities arrived.
On July 23, a Walmart employee contacted police after a seemingly disoriented man entered the store asking for water. Responding officers discovered a trailer hitched to an 18-wheeler truck in the parking lot, where a reported 39 undocumented migrants had been hiding. Eight were found dead at the scene as a result of severe dehydration and heat exposure in the 101-degree Fahrenheit heat.
According to Fox News San Antonio, the man believed to be the driver, James Matthew Bradley, 60, has been taken into police custody. The San Antonio Police Department reports he will appear in court on Monday to answer to crimes of human trafficking. All the victims were taken to area hospitals, several in extremely critical condition.
