Taiwan was lashed by two tropical storms in a row – Typhoon Nesat and Tropical Storm Haitang – in less than 24 hours over the weekend of July 30.

Typhoon Nesat hit the island first, injuring 111 people as of Saturday, July 29, the Taipei Times reported. Tropical Storm Haitang made landfall the next day, and while it was originally categorized as a typhoon before weakening into a tropical depression, the storm still pummeled eastern and southern Taiwan with torrential rain.

The arrival of Nesat and Haitang marks the first occasion since 1958 that Taiwan has been hit by two tropical storms within 24 hours.

This footage shows the wind and rain in southern Taiwan’s Pingtung County. Waves churned up by the storms can also be seen along the roads by Kenting, a resort in Pingtung, in the second video here. Credit: Instagram/vita20471120 via Storyful
