The attacks against Dr Mahathir Mohamad has come from many directions.
However, an emerging theme in the recent months was to question whether the chaiman of the Pakatan Harapan Opposition coalition, had contributed much, if anything at all, to the Malay race.
In responding to this, the 92-year-old former prime minister said the issue ultimately boils down to what people believed were his contributions.
Asked on the state of the Malays now, Dr Mahathir quickly replied, "worse off".
"It is worse than ever before because now we have a Bugis leader who pretends to be Malay," he told The Malaysian Insight in an exclusive interview.
