When the DB4 went on the market in 1958 it marked a turning point in Aston Martin’s design. Company trademarks such as the modified Atom frames and the W.O. Bentley designed engine were now things of the past as the new car was the first Aston Martin to wear the ‘Superleggera’ bodywork of Carrozzeria Touring.
The unique method of construction used aluminum-magnesium panels over steel tubing, giving the DB4 a rigid, yet undeniably light body. The new engine – a 3.7 litre straight-six with twin overhead camshafts was the brainchild of Polish engineer Tadek Marek, who prior to coming to Aston Martin, enjoyed success with General Motors and FIAT. Marek’s design was obviously similar to Jaguar’s legendary XK unit; however, the DB4’s engine utilizes all-aluminum construction, resulting in a lighter, more powerful engine than the ones that preceded it.
The result was a stunning fastback design that perfectly married the lines of Italy, while being undeniably British. This 240 horsepower Gentlemen’s Sports Car was the fastest that Britain had seen to date.
