“Start” as in “beginning” and “up”, which provides a sense of height and rising – a start-up is a newly formed company that offers growth potential in the new technologies sector, from digital to biotech.
The “start-up” is a cool company founded by dynamic and likeable young entrepreneurs. Both its employees and its bosses are more likely to be seen wearing a t-shirt, jeans and sneakers than they are a suit. (A few days’ beard growth is an “added bonus”.) Its premises are open (the famous “open-plan office”) and brightly colored, and signs of friendliness and collaboration abound, from the foosball tables to the cafeteria serving fair trade and organic food.
