NEW YORK — Eight people were killed and 11 others seriously injured Tuesday, when a man deliberately drove a rented truck onto a bike path near World Trade Center in lower Manhattan before crashing into a school bus.
The suspect then jumped out of the truck and shouted "Allahu Akbar" before firing a BB or pellet gun, authorities said, according to NBC News.
A police officer on patrol in the area returned fire, hitting the suspect in the abdomen.
The suspect was taken into custody and transported to the hospital for treatment, according to CNN.
The attacker was identified as 29-year-old Uzbek immigrant Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov. Officials say he entered the country in 2010.
The attack began at 3:05 p.m. when Saipov drove a Home Depot rental truck onto a bike path on West Street near Houston Street.
He exited the bike path when he collided with a school bus at Chambers Street, said Police Commissioner James O'Neill, according to NBC News.
There were two adults and two children on the bus, O'Neill said.
