KARACHI: Former Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Memon on Wednesday arrived at Sindh Assembly under police custody to attend a session.

The imprisoned Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) leader received a warm welcome at entrance of the provincial assembly after the PPP activists showered flower petals on him while chanting pro-PPP slogans.

However, Memon refused to have a word with press after journalists approached him outside the assembly building.

“I will give my views after the session,” he remarked.

Earlier, the assembly’s secretariat dispatched a letter to the authorities concerned to ensure his presence during the session today.

The letter read: “The Honourable Speaker, Provincial Assembly of Sindh, in exercise of powers vested upon him under sub-rule (2) of Rule 82 of Rules of Procedure of the Provincial Assembly of Sindh has summoned the above-subjected member to attend the current session of the Provincial Assembly of Sindh till prorogation, which will commence on Wednesday. In this regard you are, therefore, requested to please ensure the production of Mr Sharjeel Inam Memon in the next session.”

Memon was arrested by a National Accountabiliy Bureau (NAB) team hours after the Sindh High Court rejected his request to confirm his interim bail in a corruption reference on Oct 23 (last week).

The NAB team along with Rangers arrested the former minister from outside the court and moved him to NAB’s Sindh office.

Sharjeel Memon, flanked by his supporters and lawyers, took at least five hours to come out of the court premises as his lawyers advised him to hand him over to NAB team.
