Crowds gathered at Memphis Park in Memphis, Tennessee, on December 20 singing the lyrics to Steam’s “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye,” while a statue of Confederate leader Jefferson Davis was removed.
A statue of Civil War general and Ku Klux Klan leader Nathan Bedford Forrest was also removed from Health Sciences Park, about two miles away.
The parks were sold to Memphis Greenspace, a non-profit organization that circumvented a state law that requires the city to seek approval from the Tennessee Historical Commission for the statues’ removal, according to the Tennessean. Approval from the commission was required because the parks were public property. In response to the removals, Republican lawmakers in the state called for an investigation.
