The 101 Freeway was shut down between Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties in California on Tuesday, January 9, because of mudflows across the highway. Montecito Creek flooded onto the highway, as seen in this video.
The 101 was shut down in both directions for more than 30 miles near where the Thomas wildfire burned last year, according to the California Highway Patrol. Heavy rain in the early hours Tuesday morning triggered flooding and mudflows in areas burned by wildfires last year.
At least five people were killed and eight injured, the Los Angeles Times reported. The National Weather Service said 0.54 inches of rain fell in Montecito over five minutes during the storm. Credit: Santa Barbara County Fire Department via Storyful
