Padmaavat, previously titled Padmavati, is an upcoming Indian Hindi-language epic period drama film directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The film features Deepika Padukone in the title role as Rani Padmavati, alongside Shahid Kapoor as Maharawal Ratan Singh and Ranveer Singh as Sultan Alauddin Khilji. Aditi Rao Hydari, Jim Sarbh, Raza Murad and Anupriya Goenka feature in supporting roles. Based on the epic poem Padmavat (1540) by Malik Muhammad Jayasi, the film narrates the story of Padmavati, a legendary Rajput queen who committed jauhar to protect herself from Khilji, a ruthless Muslim king.[1][3]

With a production budget of ₹190 crore (US$30 million), Padmaavat is one of the most expensive Indian films ever made.[4] Initially scheduled for 1 December 2017, Padmavaat faced opposition from right-wing Hindu groups for allegedly distorting historical facts, despite Bhansali's insistence to the contrary. Amid violent protests in the country, a bounty was placed to behead Bhansali and Padukone. Its released was then indefinitely delayed. Later in December, the Central Board of Film Certification approved the film for theatrical exhibition and suggested 5 modifications to the film, which includes the addition of multiple disclaimers and a change in title.[5][6] Newly named Padmaavat, the film is scheduled for release on 25 January 2018 in 2D, 3D and IMAX 3D, thus making it the first India film to be released in IMAX 3D.[7]

In 1303, Alauddin Khilji, the Turko-Afghan ruler of the Delhi Sultanate,[8] laid siege to the Chittor Fort in Rajputana. According to Padmavat, Khilji led the invasion motivated by his des
