Agrasen ki Baoli, which is also known as Agar Sain ki Baoli or Ugrasen ki Baoli is a protected monument by Archaeological Survey of India under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act of 1958. This place gained even more popularity after the release of Aamir Khan’s PK, as this site featured in the movie. What more! It’s already infamous for haunted activities. So what is Agrasen ki Baoli? It is a 60-meter long and 15-meter wide historical step well on Hailey Road, near Connaught Place, Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. While there are no historical records to prove who built this well, it’s believed that it was built by the legendary king Agrasen during the Mahabharat epic era. It was rebuilt in the 14th century by the Agrawal community which traces its origin to Maharaja Agrasen. Baoli, also referred to as baori, bawdi or bauri is a Hindi word for step well. The step well of Agrasen ki Baoli has 103 steps with a series of carved chambers and passages. It has a unique structure which consists of three levels. Each of the levels is lined with arched niches on both sides. Is Agrasen ki Baoli actually haunted? Stories suggest that this stepped well was once filled with black water that enticed people to jump into it and commit suicide. Even today, it is believed that the place casts an evil spell on visitors who stay there post sunset. Visitors claim to have felt a strange presence here. The thousands of bats and pigeons residing here only add to its eeriness.
