Katte Pongali, it is also Ven Pongal. It is a traditional Andhra style rice and moong dal recipe that is often served in temples as Prasadam (Prashad). Nothing like a creamy, fragrant, warm bowl of Pongali especially during winters. There is something unique about the blending of earthy lentils with the starchy creaminess of rice. It's pure comfort food.
Ingredients:
1 cup Rice
1/2 cup Petite yellow lentils/pesara Pappu
2 tbsp ghee (clarified butter)
3 cups of water
1/4 cup cashews
10-12 Balck pepper/miriyalu/kali miri
1/2 tsp Cumin seeds
1/2 inch Chopped ginger
1/2 tsp Crushed black pepper
10- 15 curry leaves
salt to taste
Method :
1. For making Pongal, take one cup rice and 1/2 cup Petite yellow lentils.
2. Wash the rice and dal and put it in the cooker. In that add black pepper, cumin seeds and add 3 cups water for one and a half cup dal and rice mixture.
3. Pressure cook it for 3-4 whistles.
For Tempering :
1. In Pan, add ghee and heat it. Once it is hot enough, add chopped ginger, cashews and roast it until it turns brown in color.
2. Once cashews are brown in color, add crushed black pepper and curry leaves and saute it well.
3. In this tempering mixture, add cooked dal rice mixture and mix it well.
4. Once it is mixed well, add salt to taste, ghee.
Tasty Katte Pongali is ready now!! Serve it warm.
