The University of Massachusetts Amherst said six people were arrested and several others injured during late night disruption on its campus after the New England Patriots lost the Super Bowl to the Philadelphia Eagles.
In a statement, the school said around 2,000 people gathered on the Southwest residential plaza after the game ended at 10:17pm, resulting in a number of fights breaking out and individuals throwing objects and setting off smoke bombs and firecrackers.
Amherst Fire Department reported that ambulances transported 12 individuals and treated people for head injuries, lacerations and alcohol intoxication, the statement said.
This footage shows police issuing dispersal orders to the crowd, as well as officers in riot gear. The university’s statement said police ultimately used PepperBall to clear the disturbance and the area was cleared by 11:30pm. Credit: Gretchen Keller/Massachusetts Daily Collegian via Storyful
