Donald Trump Jr., President Trump's son, shared a tweet on Tuesday that apparently mocked former President Obama's recent assertion about his time in the White House. It was originally posted by Breitbart's Charlie Spiering and included Obama's statement, "We didn't have a scandal that embarrassed us."
The tweet also featured a picture of the former president standing alongside the parents of Bowe Bergdahl, a U.S. soldier involved in a situation so complicated and conspiracy-theory-packed, it seemed plucked from a spy thriller. In sharing the post, Trump Jr. added a string of laughing-so-hard-I'm-crying emojis. The quote used was reportedly part of a closed-door speech that Obama gave in Boston late last week. It was first reported by Reason magazine, which obtained audio of the address. The Bergdahl matter as it involved Obama began with the 2014 announcement that the administration had negotiated the soldier's release from Afghan Taliban captivity, notes Time. Backlash initially involved the terms of the freedom deal and later focused on reports that Bergdahl was captured after he'd defected from his military base. There were also assertions that a number of soldiers had died during the search for him. Bergdahl was dishonorably discharged in late 2017, an outcome that was deemed insufficient by some. Among them was President Trump, who called the sentencing a "complete and total disgrace," reports the New York Times.
