This week on Flashback, we celebrate the festival of colours, Holi. Exuberant and boisterous its festival of fun, friendship and frolic, it is a phenomenon that resonates across the length and breath of our mother land. It is Holi time once again, on or off-screen; the film industry has always enjoyed Holi. In films whether as a plot pivot or as a mood weaver, the Holi songs are a perennial in our cinema. These songs have seeped into our imagination and their hold over us now runs as deep as the colours of Holi. A day when every street is filled with fun and laughter, and every face smeared with colours of rainbow. Holi songs has added many a colour to Hindi films for more than five decades now. In the late 1950s and in the early colour films times, the festival provided filmmakers a welcome chance to sprinkle the screen with a splurge of colour. This colourful festival has served as a backdrop for a gamut of emotions and there are songs capturing various moods and shades of Holi written over the years. Holi is celebrated at the end of the winter season on the last full moon day of the month of Phalgun.

And so on this day of Holi, let’s celebrate the arrival of spring and indulge in merrymaking and let loose. A festival filled with joyous sounds and hope, Holi has an immense religious significance as well and that is why many lyricists have penned timeless poems.
