Former White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon reportedly reacted with apparent joy to the news that Rex Tillerson has been replaced as secretary of state. Jonathan Swan of Axios tweeted on Tuesday morning, "Unprompted text message I just received from Steve Bannon (punctuation intact): 'Come on dude!!!...end of the globalists !!!'" Earlier that day, President Trump announced Tillerson's ouster via Twitter, writing, "Mike Pompeo, Director of the CIA, will become our new Secretary of State." "He will do a fantastic job! Thank you to Rex Tillerson for his service! Gina Haspel will become the new Director of the CIA, and the first woman so chosen. Congratulations to all!" the president further said. A State Department official told the Wall Street Journal that Tillerson did not receive a pre-tweet call from Trump regarding the firing.
The publication also noted that "Mr. Trump called Mr. Pompeo over the weekend and is believed to have offered him the job in that call, a U.S. official said."
