Number of Women in Congress Reaches New High The election of Republican Debbie Lesko in Tuesday’s special election for Arizona’s 8th district Out of the 107 women, 78 are Democrats and 29 are Republicans, which represents 20 percent of congressional seats. Further, women are also setting records in the Senate, where the total is 22. The election of Tina Smith (D-Minn) in January helped boost the number. Women currently represent 23 percent of the Senate, with 17 Democrats and five Republicans.
