Supporters thronged outside the Sheraton Hotel in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia, after Mahathir Mohamad declared his victory over incumbent prime minister Najib Razak on May 10.
Mahathir, 92, who led Malaysia from 1981 to 2003, would become the world’s oldest prime minister. His opposition coalition Pakatan Harapan won 113 seats in parliament, while Najib’s Barisan Nasional coalition, which was the largest party in Malaysia’s 222-seat parliament, only took 79, according to the South China Morning Post.
Najib had been embroiled in scandals that accused him of allegedly receiving US$681 million in payments from state investement fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad, according to Channel NewsAsia.
