A new football league has kicked off with a twist – it’s for overweight blokes only. The competition is open for men with a BMI of 30 or over and points are awarded not just for games won, but pounds lost each week. It is the brainchild of Andrew Shanahan, who got fed up with women-centric weightloss classes when he tried to shed the pounds and so set up Men V Fat in 2014. With 67% of men tipping the scales with a BMI of over 25, Andrew says it’s the Sunday League teams that are exclusive and his competition will help combat the epidemic. The free 14-week season will help fans slim down to a healthy BMI of 18 to 25 and has been set up by football specialists Leisure Leagues. Kick-off is on January 11 in Solihull, West Mids., and with spots filling up quickly Andrew hopes to expand the initiative across the country.
