At least 25 people were reported killed when Guatemala’s Fuego volcano erupted on June 3, sending plumes of rock, gas, and ash over nearby villages.
The volcano is located around 40 km southwest of Guatemala City. According to CONRED, the National Disaster Management Agency, the departments of Sacatepequez, Escuintla and Chimaltenango were worst affected, and around 3,100 people were displaced as a result.
Police and emergency services were sent to the affected areas to evacuate those left and assist in rescue efforts. The villages of El Rodeo, El Zapote, San Felipe, San José los Lotes and Finca Sabana Grande were buried by fast-moving clouds of ash and rock, known as pyroclastic flow.
