BuzzFeed reported on a recent remark President Trump made relating to Russia.
President Trump told reporters Friday morning that Russia should be readmitted to the Group of 7 nations, four years after it was expelled over its annexation of Crimea.
And now, BuzzFeed News is reporting he discussed that matter later in the day as well.
"Trump told G7 leaders that Crimea is Russian because everyone who lives there speaks Russian, according to two diplomatic sources," notes the outlet. "Trump made the remarks over dinner last Friday during a discussion on foreign affairs at the G7 summit in Quebec, Canada, one of the diplomats told BuzzFeed News."
Trump has faced significant criticism for his initial public comment on Friday.
"Putin's Russia invaded its neighbors, violated our sovereignty by undermining elections, and attacks dissidents abroad. Yet our President wants to reward him with a seat at the table while alienating our closest democratic allies. It makes no sense," former Vice President Joe Biden tweeted.
Republican Senator Ben Sasse of Nebraska also weighed in, stating, "This is weak. Putin is not our friend and he is not the President's buddy. He is a thug using Soviet-style aggression to wage a shadow war against America, and our leaders should act like it."
Trump had made the comment prior to departing for the G-7 summit.
"We have a world to run," he told reporters. "And in the G-7, which used to be the G-8, they threw Russia out. They should let Russia come back in. Because we should have Russia at the negotiating table."
