A political newcomer has upset a 10-term incumbent in a Democrat primary for a New York congressional seat. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez beat Rep. Joe Crowley in a district that includes parts of Queens and the Bronx, toppling a party fixture who had been a favorite to succeed Nancy Pelosi as the party's leader in Congress. She campaigned on a progressive agenda that included expanding Medicare program to people of all ages, tuition-free public college and trade school and abolishing the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency.
