The Sunshine Coast Council on July 9 launched the NAIDOC Week in celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and history.

This video shows a welcome dance performed outside the council chamers in Nambour, Queensland.

The National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) Week started as a protest in 1920 and this year’s theme, “Because of Her, We Can”, highlights the achievements of First Nation Australian women.

The council chambers is built on the traditional country of the Kabi Kabi and Jinbara Peoples, whose tribes and languages are significant across the coastal plains and hinterlands. Credit: Sunshine Coast Council via Storyful
