American Airlines announced Tuesday that it will be removing plastic straws from its airport lounges as a first step to being more environmentally friendly. Huffington Post reports that starting this month, the airline’s lounges will provide customers with biodegradable, eco-friendly straws made out of sugar cane and stir sticks made of wood. By November, the options will be provided to customers in the air, as well. Customers will have the option of requesting a plastic straw if needed. The move follows an announcement by Starbucks on Monday that it would stop using plastic straws. American Airlines estimates its efforts will eliminate more than 71,000 pounds of plastic per year.
