대북 제재 속 김정은 경제 총력, 비핵화 협상 열쇠 될까? - 주재우 교수 대담
Joining us today is Professor Choo Jae-woo from Kyung Hee University to talks us through some of these developments. Welcome to the show Professor.
Good to be here.
1 - President Trump has said on North Korea that there is 'no rush for speed' and 'no time limit'. He said they are 'just going through the process.' This comes in contrast to his initial comments after his summit with Kim saying that denuclearization would start very quickly. Does this suggest that now the process is going to be dragged out for a long time?
2 - By allowing North Korea time, Trump seems to be easing pressure on the regime to denuclearize. Would you agree? (Does Washington have a choice?)
3 - Trump emphasized that sanctions remain on North Korea. Is that enough pressure on the regime for it move towards denuclearization? How badly are sanctions affecting North Korea?
3a - There are of course reports that North Korea does many things to get around the sanctions. How effectively are they being enforced?
4 - Trump has said sanctions will remain in place, but Russia and China have said sanctions should be eased. In fact, China has started to lift some restrictions that they had imposed themselves on North Korea. Are the U.S. efforts being undermined?
5 - Will the U.S. trade war with China also play into North Korea sanctions? Could China hold the North Korea situation hostage, as part of its dispute with the U.S.?
6 - Kim Jong-un was also reported in the North Korean state media the other day scolding workers at construction sites. That was quite startling behaviour, especially it being reported on North Korean media. What do you make of his actions?
7 - Since the turn of the year, Kim Jong-un seems to be emphasizing economic progress rather than the nuclear program. There also seems to be a rush to have something to show for the 70th anniversary of the foundation of the regime. How do you view this situation?
8 - A U.S. report has said that South Korea has violated North Korea sanctions after two shipments of North Korean coal were allowed into South Korea last year. Seoul has said they are investigating the matter, but what do you make of this report?
9 - North Korea will of course try to get around the sanctions any way it knows how. How important is it that all nations get on board, and is that likely?
10 - South Korea has said it will continue to push for sanctions on North Korea until it denuclearizes, but at the same time Seoul has been holding several meetings on cooperation, such as reconnecting road and railways, as well as forestation projects, and sporting ventures. Does this undermine the international community's efforts for sanctions and pressure on the regime?
Thank you for your time.
