Imran Khan, former cricketer for Pakistan, has inched closed to winning the election with nearly half the votes counted, but his PTI party will need to form a coalition to secure a majority after vote rigging allegations and the tragic polling station suicide bombing in Quetta. Known as the playboy cricketer, in the same way that he captained his country’s squad to victory in the World Cup in 1992, he could make similar moves in politics, as Peter Oborne claimed Khan could ‘wipe out terrorism’.
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan has declared victory in Pakistan. In his first televised speech after election results showed PTI as the single-largest party, Imran Khan promised to make Pakistan a better country where rule of the law would be followed. He also promised to work for the poorest of the poor. Imran said Pakistan had suffered against the hands of corrupt but things would not be the same. He also vowed to fight corruption and promised to make institutions stronger and fulfil Muhammad Ali Jinnah's dream for Pakistan.
Pakistan's former sports-celebrity-turned politician, Imran Khan, in his televised election victory speech Thursday pledged to tackle poverty and endemic corruption through a revamped governance system in the country.
In his brief speech, Khan also spoke about how his party intends to deal with foreign policy challenges facing Pakistan.
Khan delivered the speech as about 90 percent of the results from Wednesday's parliamentary polls already had been compiled. Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PT) party was well ahead of its main rival, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) of jailed former prime minister, Nawaz Sharif.
